Dons excited by Reds' visit

Dons excited by Reds' visit

United's pre-season friendly campaign starts against Aberdeen on Saturday, and the Dons can't wait to welcome the European champions to Pittodrie.

Sir Alex Ferguson returns to his former club 25 years after guiding them to glory in the European Cup Winners' Cup, in an anniversary testimonial for the Dons team dubbed 'the Gothenburg Greats'.

Although Pittodrie sampled a memorable UEFA Cup campaign last season, squaring up against the Champions League winners is another matter altogether.

“It’s one I’m definitely looking forward to," said midfielder Derek Young. “We played some fantastic games against some unbelievable European teams in our UEFA Cup run last season, but this will be something else.

“I know it’s a friendly, but it still means a lot to the boys. How often do you get the chance to play the European Champions? This will be a great chance to us to show what we can do, and will be a good part of our pre-season.

“They’ll have a few boys missing who are resting after the European Championships, but they won’t struggle to fill the places, I’m sure.

“It’s going to be a strong side they put out, no matter who they play. We’d love to be able to play against sides like this all the time, so we’ll enjoy it as games like this don’t come along very often.”
