Ronaldo: I'm Joining Madrid Next Week

Ronaldo: I'm Joining Madrid Next Week

Cristiano Ronaldo has sensationally told Spanish newspaper 'AS' that he will be joining Real Madrid, and will next week travel to Manchester to notify Sir Alex Ferguson that he is leaving the English and European Champions.

Real Madrid have been on red alert ever since the Portuguese international spoke of his ambition to join them. Madrid President Ramon Calderon has even boasted of how he would splash out €100m on the United man, only for the English club to refute all offers and shackle the player.

It now seems as if the English club has no choice but to sell, as Ronaldo has issued an ultimatum as he attempts to cut and run from Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

Ronaldo is currently in Portugal where he is recovering from injury but he admits that he will return to England next week to confront his club and tell them that he is joining Real.

"Everything is fine. Next week I will return to England and tell them [Manchester United] that my only desire is to play for Real Madrid and that I will not negotiate," Ronaldo told AS.

According to reports in Spain, the winger will hold a meeting next Tuesday with Ferguson and the club's owners to tell them that he has had enough.

It's not what United fans want to hear but it seems as if the Ronaldo saga is finally coming to an end and no doubt Calderon will be dancing to the tune of Ronaldo's words.

Edwin: Ronny can win the lot here

Edwin: Ronny can win the lot here

Edwin van der Sar says Cristiano Ronaldo will keep on winning football’s top trophies by staying at United.

All summer the Reds winger has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, but Sir Alex Ferguson has said that Ronaldo will be a United player next season.

And van der Sar, who saved the penalty that clinched Champions League glory in Moscow in May, insists United are on the up and up.

"There have been a lot of things said and it is a very personal situation but we have a great team here, we play in a great stadium, with great fans and we have an opportunity to win more," Edwin told Sky Sports News.

"It is not that the team is going backwards. We have other trophies to play for, like the Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup. You don't get the chance to play in those competitions very often because you need to win the Champions League to qualify.”

The 37-year-old has been around long enough to recognise in a team the potential to win trophies, and clearly that is what he sees at Old Trafford.

"In my opinion, being at Manchester United is a great way to play at the highest level and win trophies with a team that is very closely knitted together,” he added.

"Cristiano also has a contract here. Sometimes things change but we have a good squad here without any question."

Eagles Lands At Turfmoor

Eagles Lands At Turfmoor

Burnley have completed the signing of Manchester United winger Chris Eagles in a deal worth about £1.25million.

Eagles had starred in United’s summer African tour, scoring twice. He netted the equaliser in the South African encounter against Kaizer Chiefs as well as scoring the opener in the win over Portsmouth in Nigeria.

However, Eagles only managed six senior first team appearances for the Red Devils in the five years he was at the club, scoring one Premier League goal.

The 22-year-old makes a permanent deal away from Old Trafford after loan spells at Watford, Sheffield Wednesday and NEC Nimegen.

Of the capture, Burnley manager Owen Coyle said: "I have watched Chris for years and he has always impressed me. He is just a really gifted footballer, so I asked the question a few times and the answer was no all the time.

“I just kept going back and in the end that has paid off because we have undoubtedly signed a quality player. It's a substantial sum of money, with adds-ons included, but I think it is fair to say that we have finally landed one of our major targets."

Coyle intends to lower the average-age of his squad next season, something which is represented by the signing of Eagles.

He continued: "I am not saying we will achieve it overnight but we have set or stall out to try to bring younger footballers to the club and develop the team to build it year on year.”

Neville continues fitness bid

Neville continues fitness bid

Gary Neville aims to continue his bid to be fully fit for the start of the season with some more minutes on the pitch over the coming week.

Old Trafford will play host to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's testimonial match on Saturday against Espanyol and a friendly with Juventus the following Wednesday.

After completing the full 90 minutes of United's 2-1 over Portsmouth in Nigeria on Sunday evening, the skipper is hoping to be involved in at least one of the Reds' upcoming games.

"It was important for me to play 90 minutes in Nigeria, but I did feel it in the last 15 minutes," he told MUTV.

"But then, when I was 23, I would have felt it in the last 15. I think everyone felt it. It was a tough game in humid conditions.

"Now I'm hoping to play in at least one of the games against Espanyol or Juventus."

Having been forced to watch from the sidelines as his team-mates sealed a glorious double last season, the 33-year-old is determined not to miss out this time round.

"Last season was very frustrating from a personal point of view. It was very disappointing not be involved in what was such a great season for the club," he admits.

"Playing in these matches in pre-season will help my fitness and sharpness and hopefully I can be a part of another successful season."

Cantona To Cristiano: Don't Be Stupid

Cantona To Cristiano: Don't Be Stupid

Manchester United icon Eric Cantona has once again chimed in on the die-hard rumours linking Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

Cantona, 42, has already gone on record as saying that he cannot understand why the Portuguese megastar would want to leave Old Trafford, and this time he wasn't holding back any punches.

Cantona said: "He is still young, and so maybe he wants to take on fresh challenges. I can understand if this is the reason why he wants to leave for Real.

"But if he were to leave because of something else, he would be doing something absolutely bloody stupid."

The Frenchman, who spent five glorious years at the club inspiring United to four Premier League titles and two FA Cups before retiring from football in 1997, also took the opportunity to confirm reports that he would love to make an emotional return to Old Trafford as a manager.

"It would be a huge honour for me to become Manchester United's coach - it would be marvellous," he told The Mirror.

Giggs a beacon for Reds' future

Giggs a beacon for Reds' future

Ryan Giggs' gloriously successful career has been underpinned by an unyielding desire to keep on winning trophies.

The 34-year-old Welshman has never been one to rest on his achievements, preferring and United will be hoping his attitude and approach to staying at the very top of the football pyramid will filter down to the young players in the current squad.

Giggs has been around long enough to recognise the winning trait in players, and one look around the dressing room fills him with confidence that last season’s highs will not be his last.

“I think that’s the biggest challenge,” he said in an exclusive interview with Inside United magazine.

“To be fair, the young lads rose to the challenge of defending the Premier League title last season. For many of them that had been their first time as champions, and it’s much harder to defend it because everybody always wants to beat the best. They did that, and then went on to win the Champions League as well.”

Ten league titles and two Champions League crowns are the pride of Giggs’ honours. He’s won enough to know that the challenge only gets more difficult.

“It does get tougher, because you’ve got to keep that desire and that hunger in order to succeed," he added. "I’m sure all the young lads have that, but us older ones and the manager will stress it to them anyway. They’re all good lads, they all wanted to win trophies when they came here, and they want to win more now. There won’t be a problem there.”

High hopes for starlets

High hopes for starlets

Sir Alex Ferguson has earmarked a host of his promising youngsters as future Old Trafford stars and hopes to see them make significant progress over the coming season.

A number of the young players have impressed during United's pre-season trip to South Africa with Chris Eagles, Lee Martin, Tom Cleverley and Fraizer Campbell all finding the net.

Assured displays from Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Possebon and Belfast-born defender Craig Cathcart during Saturday's Vodacom Challenge final victory have given Sir Alex further cause for optimism.

"They are all at a good age in terms of us judging them," he said. "Most of them have been out on loan and done well.

"Jonny Evans had a good spell at Sunderland and was instrumental in them staying up. Campbell was instrumental in bringing Hull up.

"Lee Martin has been unfortunate with injuries, but he showed what he can do by setting up the first goal [against the Kaizer Chiefs]. He has potential.

"Cathcart is looking much stronger and the intention is to put him out on loan this season. Possebon will stay as he has potential for first team football, while Cleverley is just a young lad and has time on his side. All the young players have good potential."

Rio: I'll be fit for title defence

Rio: I'll be fit for title defence

Rio Ferdinand has brushed off any doubts about his fitness and is certain he will be fully fit for the start of United's Premier League title defence.

Ferdinand has missed much of United's pre-season campaign so far. He has been limited to just one outing - the full 90 minutes against Orlando Pirates in South Africa.

A back strain kept him out of the first match against Kaizer Chiefs, and he did not play in either of this weekends games against Kaizer Chiefs and Portsmouth as he had flown home to be with his partner who is expecting their second child.

But Ferdinand is unperturbed by his lack of playing time so far this summer.

"I don't see it as a problem," he said. "There's enough games to get under my belt before the start of the season.

"Fingers crossed I'll be fit for those. I did ground work before going out to South Africa and I'll do a lot of work in training back at home."

Fergie Blasts Blatter's Slavery Rant

Fergie Blasts Blatter's Slavery Rant

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has belatedly waded into the slavery debate, insisting Sepp Blatter’s controversial comments were “unfortunate”…

Blatter shocked the world and garnered almost unanimous criticism when he claimed that top-flight footballers are being subjected to “modern slavery” by their clubs.

The FIFA president’s remarks came in reference to Cristiano Ronaldo’s situation with United, who have thus far refused to let their star winger fulfil his dream of playing for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo sent the controversy into overdrive when he publicly backed Blatter’s stance – a move that has done nothing to halt the Portuguese international’s fast-growing reputation as a pampered mercenary.

Ferguson has echoed the rest of the football fraternity by pointing out that slaves did not receive mega-money wages, and added that the whole episode is highly regrettable.

“I know that slavery was abolished many years ago,” the Scotsman said in The Sun. “It’s an unfortunate statement from someone in such an important position to come out with.

“You must remember some players have been paid £5million and £6m a year.

“I think when you consider that then you should not give dignity to such comments, considering the history of slavery to everyone.

“It’s an unfortunate statement from someone like him.”

Euro crown tough to retain

Euro crown tough to retain

United face a tough task retaining the Champions League crown the Reds won so dramatically in Moscow, according to Owen Hargreaves. But he says Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad certainly have the talent to be among the main contenders.

AC Milan were the last team to win back-to-back European Cup titles in 1989 and 1990. But it would seem that long gone are the days when, between 1971-1980, the trophy changed hands just four times. Ajax won it three times between 1971-73, Bayern Munich held the title between 1974-76, Liverpool won it twice in a row in 1977-78, and Nottingham Forrest clinched successive crowns in 1979 and 1980.

“It is not impossible to retain the Champions League but it is going to be difficult,” said Hargreaves. “Barcelona have signed the right players, Real Madrid look good, and Chelsea have improved dramatically.

"It’s going to be tough and it’s a big ask. But we are very capable of doing it again.”

Hargreaves knows precisely how tough it can be. Having won the trophy in his first season with Bayern Munich in 2000/01, the Germans then surrendered the crown the following year, losing to eventual winners Real Madrid in the quarter finals.
“It is getting harder and harder to win the Champions League,” Hargreaves added. “The most important thing is to peak at the right moments. You need to get through the groups and put yourself in a position where you have the home leg second like we did last season.

"Everything fell for us at the right time. Our form was good all season, and in the decisive games it was even better. We did a good job of peaking at the right time and it’s something we will have to do again this year.”

United’s advantage is the age of some of the players in the squad, who will only have benefited from last season’s experience. It doesn’t guarantee success, but it has provided the team with a solid foundation and Hargreaves expects the Reds to push on this term.

“I think we can get better,” he says. “I definitely believe that. Cristiano is injured and Anderson will be away at the Olympics, so we will miss them early on. But apart from that the squad looks good. Even the younger players. Wayne is only 22 so he will improve.

"These players have been together for another year and I am looking forward to seeing how they do together. Gary Neville is also back, so it’s looking good for us.”

Report: United 2 Pompey 1

Report: United 2 Pompey 1

A solid test in the Nigerian capital of Abuja saw United’s unbeaten pre-season campaign continue, with the Reds running out 2-1 winners against Portsmouth.

Second-half goals from Chris Eagles and Carlos Tevez gave United a deserved win in what was a decent work-out against Premier League opposition, a side that will become familiar foes in the coming weeks. This is the first of three matches in the space of a month against Harry Redknapp’s men; there’s also the Community Shield at Wembley on 10 August, then the league encounter two weeks later at Fratton Park.

United were without Wayne Rooney for this match, he suffered a dead leg against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, while Ben Foster was also out with a knock. Sir Alex continued to give young players a chance, with Jonny Evans, Darron Gibson, Eagles and Fraizer Campbell included from the start.

The Reds began brightly and were controversially denied a fifth-minute opener. Glen Johnson fouled Campbell inside the area, giving Tevez the chance to score from the spot. He expertly sent David James the wrong way, but the referee ordered a retake for an encroachment into the box. Having previously plumped for placement, Tevez chose power but could only look on as his second attempt rattled the bar.

Despite a dramatic start, the game was played at a relatively conservative pace, perhaps due to the heat – humid 28oC temperatures at kick-off – or the fact that both teams had played matches the day before. However, any openings were coming from United; Chris Eagles missed a one-on-one with James midway through the half, then Campbellspurned a chance from a similar position on 35 minutes.

In the second half Jermain Defoe was first to go close, forcing an excellent low save from the rarely-tested Tomasz Kuszczak. But five minutes after the restart United, and Eagles specifically, made amends for missed first-half chances. Pompey failed to clear the ball from a Reds attack and Eagles smashed the loose ball into the top corner from 12 yards. It was nothing more than Sir Alex’s men deserved.

United soon moved 2-0 in front with another emphatic finish. Tevez raced down the right channel and surprised James, who was expecting a shot across goal, with powerful low drive into the near corner. It was his last touch of the match – he was replaced by Ryan Giggs - but a good note to end on for the impressive Argentinian.

Defoe pulled back a goal for Portsmouth in the last minute of normal time, but United held out to record a third win in four matches in Africa, bringing the curtain down on a highly successful visit.

Other plus points on the night were Jonny Evans’ display in defence, and outings for youngster Ben Amos, Tom Cleverley and Rodrigo Possebon. United now return to England with matches against Espanyol (2 Aug), Peterborough (4 Aug), Juventus (6 Aug) and Portsmouth (10 Aug) before the start of the season.

United: Kuszczak (Amos, 76); Neville, Vidic, Evans (Cathcart, 65), Silvestre; Gibson (Possebon, 73), Carrick (O'Shea, 65), Scholes, Eagles (Cleverley, 79); Tevez (Giggs, 65), Campbell.
Subs not used: Fletcher, Simpson, Martin.

Tevez To Quit In Four Years

Tevez To Quit In Four Years

Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez has revealed his intention to walk away from European football in four years time.

The 24-year old is currently the subject of a British record transfer bid over £30million, but insists that he will not continue his stay in Europe past the age of 28.

Tevez has impressed since coming to Europe from Corinthians in 2006. The Argentinean helped West Ham United stay in the Premier League during his first season in England, and claimed the Champions League and Premier League crowns last term with the Old Trafford side.

However, Tevez revealed that he is finding difficult to adjust to the European life-style, and wants to return to his native country and his family.

Tevez told The Mirror: "At various times I've told myself that I want to retire at 28. I will only stay in Europe for a maximum of another four years. Life is very different here from Argentina - even the restaurants close earlier. If you're not with your family things get difficult."

Despite his intention to depart from football in four years, Tevez remains focussed on reaping success with his current club.

He continued: "There are always new challenges. Mine is to be the ultimate champion. It's not like now I've won the Champions League I don't want it again - I want to repeat the success."

Meanwhile, as the Tevez transfer goes through, the Premier League revealed that they will no longer permit third-party ownership agreements. Both Tevez and compatriot Javier Mascherano arrived at West Ham as part of Kia Joorabchian’s MSI empire.

A Premier League spokesperson stated: "We are happy that United's agreement with Tevez met all our requirements last year, but this will be the last time we will allow a player owned by a third party to join a Premier League club."

Rooney should face Pompey

Rooney should face Pompey

Wayne Rooney should be fit to face Portsmouth on Sunday evening in Nigeria, despite suffering a dead leg in the Reds' 4-0 victory over the Kaizer Chiefs.

The striker was cynically stopped in his tracks as he made a run forward just after the re-start by Chiefs' defender Jonathan Quartey, who was booked for the tackle.

Rooney carried on and subsequently put the Reds 2-0 ahead, before being substituted on 66 minutes. But Sir Alex confirmed he is likely to be involved against Pompey.

"Wayne got a knock above the knee and a dead leg just after half-time. That's why we took him off, but he should be okay for Sunday," revealed the United boss.

"Gary Neville and Mikael Silvestre will both start, as will [Paul] Scholes and [Carlos] Tevez. Only Danny Simpson and John O'Shea won't play."

Report: Chiefs 0 United 4

Report: Chiefs 0 United 4

United were too classy for Kaizer Chiefs in the Vodacom Challenge final, as the Reds cruised to a 4-0 victory.

Goals from Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Tom Cleverley and Fraizer Campbell settled a game in which the Reds only fully took control in the second half.

The Chiefs set much of the early pace, as the English champions took time to find their groove. The heat and altitude in Pretoria may have played its part, likewise United’s unfamiliar team selection.

That was understandable, however. With the Reds due to face Portsmouth in Nigeria little more than 24 hours after this clash, Sir Alex called on the club’s youth. Youngsters Craig Cathcart and Rodrigo Possebon (both yet to make competitive first-team appearances) both started, as did Danny Simpson and Lee Martin.

Possebon’s first two touches oozed confidence and class, as the young Brazilian slotted easily into his central midfield role. Later, when he sprayed a pass 40 yards out to Martin on the left wing, it was just like watching Paul Scholes.

But it was the familiar face of Wayne Rooney who engineered the game’s first spark. Collecting the ball on the right side of the Chiefs’ box, Rooney shaped to blast the ball goalwards. Instead, he orchestrated a cheeky chip that had goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune scrambling back towards goal before breathing a sigh of relief as the ball dropped onto the roof of the net.

As was the case in Cape Town last Saturday, Kaizer Chiefs weren’t intimidated by United. Tricky winger Siphiwe Tshabalalawas particularly direct, running at Simpson at every opportunity. Tshabalala, in his bright red boots and dreadlocked hair, makes Chief tick. Speedy and skilful, he also possesses an assured first touch and exquisite vision.

After a period of United dominance, in which Rooney saw two shots saved by Khune, the South Africans almost took the lead. They were first denied a penalty when Tomasz Kuszczak raced out to reach Cathcart’s header and Mthembu went to ground. Then Tshabalala flashed a free-kick inches wide of the post.

When the next chance of the match fell to Ryan Giggs on 40 minutes, the Welshman made no mistake, lashing Lee Martin’s cross back past Khune and into the roof of the net. Giggs’ right-foot rocket not only put United in the driving seat, it also raised R100,000 for the tournament’s Goals For Miracles campaign. By the time the final whistle went, the charity was R400,000 better off.

Giggs was denied a second shortly after the interval by a fine save from Khune, and Wayne Rooney blasted the follow-up into the side-netting. United’s record appearance maker was again involved on 53 minutes, his curling cross finding Cathcart at the back post. Despite the time and space he was afforded, the young Northern Irishman could only plant his header wide.

The Reds did add a second on 57 minutes as Wayne Rooney beat the offside trap to sprint clear and finish under the onrushing Khune. It was the sort of composure in front of goal strikers sometimes lack during pre-season, and yet Rooney has now found the net in two of his last three starts.

He turned provider five minutes later, nodding down Danny Simpson’s cross at the back post for substitute Tom Cleverley to fire home from six yards. Cleverley, a constant fixture in the Reds’ second string last season, was engulfed by team-mates as they celebrated his strike.

The Chiefs’ early energy had faded and United’s final goal arrived courtesy of another substitute, Fraizer Campbell.

Again, the Chiefs’ offside trap failed. Chris Eagles laid the ball into Campbell’s path and the 21-year-old showed the kind of form that netted him 15 goals during his loan spell at Hull City last season.

In truth, the result was never important; United’s time in South Africa was all about improving fitness levels. Still, it’s always nice to see the Reds win some silverware.

Hargo: Rooney can 'explode'

Hargo: Rooney can 'explode'
<

Owen Hargreaves has heaped praise on Wayne Rooney and predicted the striker will have a ‘massive’ 2008/09 season.

Hargreaves already believes his team-mate is England’s most talented player and warned the rest of the Premier League that the 22-year-old will only get better.

The Reds midfielder said: “This will be a massive season for Wayne. He could be one of the most influential players in the Premier League and I am looking forward to seeing him really explode.

“Ability-wise he is the best English player. It is very rare you get someone as good as that – he is exceptionally gifted. He is only 22 and it feels like he has been around for ever.

“Wayne has had a fabulous career already but he has so much more to offer. This season I am looking forward to him doing even better, scoring more goals and being even more effective.”

Rooney was frequently deployed in an unfamiliar wide role last term and his goal tally suffered as a result, although Hargreaves recognises the value of the frontman’s tireless contribution to United’s cause.

“It is a blessing and not a coincidence that we were so successful last season with Wayne and Carlos [Tevez] doing so much work up front,” Hargreaves continued.

“Wayne is so unselfish – he will do a job anywhere you ask him. He does a lot of work for the rest of the team, which other offensive players would not do.

"But he has so much ability to decide a game as well. The Aston Villa game in the FA Cup was probably the best example of that. He decided the game on his own in the space of 20 minutes. Not a lot of English players can do that.”

Tevez Enters Ronaldo Debate

Tevez Enters Ronaldo Debate

Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez has offered his two cents on the Cristiano Ronaldo saga, insisting his team-mate’s wish to leave the club is understandable…

Real Madrid remain intent on adding Ronaldo to their already star-studded squad this summer, and the Portuguese winger has made no secret of his desire to make the switch to Spain.

United are loath to let last season’s top-scorer leave, however, even though Sir Alex Ferguson has threatened to banish the 23-year-old to the reserves as punishment for his lack of loyalty.

Tevez, on the other hand, sympathises with the ex-Sporting Lisbon star’s position, having himself been targeted by los Merengues prior to joining the Red Devils from West Ham last year.

And the Argentine ace may also have strayed offside of Ferguson after suggesting Ronaldo should be allowed to leave Old Trafford if he so desires.

"It is clear he is a very important player for us but this is a personal decision, which is up to him only," Tevez said in The Guardian.

"I understand Cristiano. Every footballer wants to pay at Real Madrid. I also think that everyone wants to play for Manchester United but, if what he seeks is something else, that should be respected.

"I have not talked to him but, when these things happen, neither side feels good."

Fergie: Ferdinand's The Best

Fergie: Ferdinand's The Best

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced that he has the best defender in Europe in his ranks in Rio Ferdinand.

After having been forced to sit out United's first two pre-season games due to a troublesome back, Ferdinand looked as composed as ever during the 1-0 victory against South African side Orlando Pirates in the Vodacom Challenge.

Sir Alex was obviously delighted to have his most integral defender back, as evidence by his latest comments on the England star.

"Rio has been the best defender in the country if not Europe for a couple of years," trumpeted Ferguson.

"His maturity and leadership have been key factors in the team's success.

"He is someone that young players learn from and that more experienced players respect.

"I have not seen a better defensive pairing than him and Nemanja for a long time," he added, making sure to give credit to Ferdinand's first-choice defensive partner Vidic as well.

Ferdinand, 29, can consider himself to be very lucky to have escaped disciplinary action from the FA after he reportedly kicked out at a Chelsea steward last season. A suspension would not only have seen him missing the beginning of the Premier League season but could also England’s upcoming friendly against the Czech Republic, which would have seriously dented his hopes of being named as the national team's permanent skipper.

Scholes: Two More Years

Scholes: Two More Years

Manchester United veteran Paul Scholes has confessed that, when he hangs up the boots with the next two years, he will not miss the lifestyle that comes with being a professional footballer…

Scholes has always been the least glamorous of United’s stars, despite a decorated career in which he has collected myriad winner’s medals and been recognised among Europe’s elite midfielders.

While the likes of David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Ruud van Nistelrooy, et al courted cameras or controversy at some stage in their careers at Old Trafford, the Ginger Prince has usually shied away from such publicity.

The former England international has continually struggled against the tide to keep his family life private and his football life strictly professional. He longs for the day when he longer has to deal with such issues.

"I can't say that I can't wait to finish, but I am looking forward to finishing being involved with everything that goes with it," Scholes said in The Telegraph.

"I suppose people are just very invasive and are always wanting to know what you're going to do. The only thing I will definitely miss is the football, not the general life of a footballer."

Two Years

United fans will no doubt hope Scholes endures as many more years as he can, given his importance to the team even in his veteran years.

Although he does not get forward as much these days and his legs may not be what they used to, the Ginger Prince is still rightly regarded as one of the Premier League’s foremost playmakers, having adapted marvellously to the deep-lying, quasi-holding role.

Many feel he could carry on for several seasons in that manner; however, Scholes expects to be an ex-player come June 2010.

"How long will I go on? I'd think two years at the most," he said. "I have one year left on my contract and, hopefully, I'll get another one, but I suppose it all depends on how you're feeling and how you're playing."

Ahead

Scholes is notoriously devoted to Oldham Athletic, his childhood team, and many expect him to play for the Boundary Park club once he calls time on his career with the Red Devils.

But the Manchester native insists he will only what lies beyond United when that day finally comes.

"It's difficult to say whether I want to bow out at the top [with United] or not," he added. "I'll just have to see, when the time comes, whether I want to carry on playing somewhere else at a lower level. But I don't look that far ahead."

The future is bright

The future is bright

United's conveyor belt of young talent is in good shape, according to Reserves manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Reds' opulent history of producing players from within is much-fabled, but no homegrown talents have established themselves as senior regulars at Old Trafford since Darren Fletcher and John O'Shea.

Having experienced first-hand the talent within Carrington's current crop of youngsters, however, Solskjaer is adamant that the future is bright.

"There are people with first-team potential that I am working with at the moment," he told the Manchester Evening News. "United do have a history of getting players into the first team from their own ranks.

"In the last few years we've had Gerard Pique and Giuseppe Rossi come through, though they are now at other clubs. There are the likes of Darren Fletcher, John O'Shea and Wes Brown who have all come through the system, so there is a chance. It is up to every individual. It is not impossible.

"The difficulty here is you have the demand of winning almost every game at United so you cannot just put a player in to see how he is doing just
because you can afford to take a chance on a particular game. It's not like that here because you have to win so they have to be ready."

Although first team openings remain few and far between given the enduring demands for success at Old Trafford, Ole is adamant that no heads have dropped among the youth ranks.

"It is no problem to keep these lads motivated," he said. "They are so positive and dedicated. They know if they are good enough they will get a chance. If not they know they will get a good career somewhere else. That is what we have said to them.

"We want to get as many as possible into the first team here, of course, that is the aim but for the rest we want to make careers for them at other clubs.

"I have had discussions with the manager about who is going to go out on loan. Maybe after one year they are ready to go somewhere else. You don't want to stay in the Reserves for three years because the boat is starting to sink and perhaps you should then be elsewhere."

Owen: Fans deserve parade

Owen: Fans deserve parade

Owen Hargreaves is looking forward to taking part in the Reds’ double trophy parade at Old Trafford on 6 August, a celebration he feels is 10 weeks later than it should have been.

The midfielder was as disappointed as anyone when United were forced to shelve plans for an open-top bus tour around Manchester because of trouble between fans in the city centre after the UEFA Cup final on 14 May.

But he is now urging fans to take a one-off chance to see the silverware and celebrate United’s historic 2007/08 campaign ahead of what promises to be a high-quality pre-season friendly against Italian giants Juventus.

“It’s a belated but great opportunity for the fans to see the trophies,” he told ManUtd.com. “We didn’t have a celebration after the Champions League final and this is something that should have happened earlier, straight after we came back from Moscow.

“The players, staff and fans who put so much work into the season were disappointed not to go on a parade. It’s a shame that it was cancelled because of other people’s actions at the UEFA Cup final.

“The double was a crowning achievement and it should be celebrated - it doesn’t happen very often.”An hour before kick-off against Juve, the United players will walk out with the Premier League and Champions League trophies, for photos at all four stands.

Hargreaves, who is recovering from a recurrence of the tendonitis which disrupted the start of his United career, is keen to be involved in the evening’s events.

“I hope I get to carry out a trophy!” the 27-year-old added. “Obviously it’s not the same environment as it would have been, but it’s probably too late to have a bus parade now.

“It’s nevertheless a wonderful chance for everyone to see the trophies again. Hopefully we’ll have a good game against Juve and the fans will enjoy a great evening.”

Scholes excited by the future

Scholes excited by the future

Staging a repeat of last season's double triumph is not out of the question for United during the upcoming campaign, according to midfielder Paul Scholes.

As one of the Reds' elder statesmen, Scholes is well placed to assess the future potential of United's young guns.

And he's convinced that having scooped the double last season, the team's starlets will continue to go from strength to strength.

"It's an exciting time and a good time to be involved," insisted the 33-year-old.

"The young players coming through are only going to be better next year for the experience they’ve had. Everyone who came in to the team last year played a massive part in our achievements.

"It is a big ask [to retain the Champions League], but I feel we can only go from strength to strength."

Scholes saw enough from United's young players last season to convince him that they are more than capable of coping when the going gets tough.

"It is one thing having the talent and doing it in training every day but you have got to do it where it matters," he insisted.

“Thankfully we have the players who can do that - young lads who do not seemed to be fazed by anything. They are very confident and look forward to the big games.

“Hopefully we can get off to a good start and a good finish by winning more trophies.”

Foster 'can be the best'

Foster 'can be the best'

Sir Alex Ferguson reiterated his belief that Ben Foster will soon be England’s number one after the United stopper kept a clean sheet against Orlando Pirates in Durban.

It was Foster’s first full 90 minutes in the first team since he made his United debut against Derby County in March and he was twice called upon to make sharp saves.

The Reds’ boss was delighted with the 24-year-old’s performance and expects big things from the goalkeeper this season.

“With the ability he has, Ben is certainly going to be challenging for a first-team place,” Sir Alex said.

“That’s also good news for England. They’ve brought David James back in and if they’ve gone back to an experienced goalkeeper it tells you there’s an opportunity there for Ben.

“Edwin will start the season as number one. Remember, Ben’s in competition with one of the best goalkeepers of all time. There’s no way I’d discount Edwin van der Sar after his performances for us.

“The potential of Ben Foster is there for all to see and if he’s patient he’ll get his chance. Goalkeepers can have longer careers than outfield players – Edwin can easily play until he’s 40. Ben’s only 24 so he has 14 or 15 years left. There’s no need for the boy to panic. His time will come.”

Foster knows how difficult it will be to break into the starting XI, but he told MUTV he’s determined to keep working hard.

“I have to be confident,” he said. “Like Edwin and Tomasz, I want to play. All I can do is go out on the training pitch and work hard, and when I get a chance in games I need to do as well as I can.“I’m looking to push Edwin and Tomasz all the way – it’s going to be a good fight for the goalkeeper’s jersey.

“[The match on Tuesday in Durban] was my first game in four or five months, so it was nice to blow the cobwebs out.

"I was a bit rusty at times but it was good to keep a clean sheet. The key to being a good United goalkeeper is to be on your toes for 90 minutes and expect the unexpected. They had a shot at the end but that was about all I had to do."

Pirates 0 United 1

Pirates 0 United 1

United enjoyed another energetic pre-season workout as Lee Martin’s first-half goal gave the Reds a comfortable Vodacom Challenge win over Orlando Pirates.

In a second competitive game in South Africa, an athletic Pirates side made some feisty challenges but lacked the penetrative edge of their rivals Kaizer Chiefs, with Reds goalkeeper Ben Foster largely a spectator.

Midfielder Martin scored the winner in the 23rd minute, poking the ball home inside the box after running onto a Fraizer Campbell flick-on.

Sir Alex Ferguson made plenty of changes to his side, with youngsters Jonny Evans, Darron Gibson, Campbell and Martin handed starts in front of 50,000 noisy fans in Durban.

Carlos Tevez had the game’s first chance in the seventh minute, his low shot from the edge of the box drawing a smart save from Senzo Meyiwa.

Meyiwa was called into action again three minutes later to deny Martin, while Carrick saw a sweetly-struck volley deflected wide as United dominated early on.

Fraizer Campbell’s pace was causing problems for the Pirates defence and the young striker was involved in the opener, heading the ball on to Martin, who shrugged off Happy Jele and finished smartly past Meyiwa.Centre-backs Rio Ferdinand, fully recovered from a back spasm, and Evans had little trouble dealing with the Bucs’ enthusiastic but largely toothless attack.

Martin had a strong penalty appeal waved away shortly before half-time and both he and Ferdinand were surprisingly booked for their protests.

United found the Pirates in more determined mood at the start of the second half and the Reds did not create as many clear-cut chances.

Foster was called into rare action to deny Lebogang Mothibantwa and Joseph Makhanya, before Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes came on for a 20-minute run-out. The two substitutes almost combined immediately to score United’s second, Rooney laying the ball off for Scholes to hit a first-time shot that was parried by Meyiwa.

The Reds failed to add to Martin’s opener but claimed a second pre-season victory and, more importantly, 16 of the squad benefited from some more useful match action.

United: Foster, Brown, Ferdinand, Evans (Simpson 88), Silvestre (O'Shea 62), Eagles, Carrick (Scholes 69), Gibson (Fletcher 82), Martin, Tevez (Rooney 69), Campbell.

Raúl Defends Madrid Against Ferguson

Raúl Defends Madrid Against Ferguson

Raúl González has spoken out in defence of Real Madrid after Sir Alex Ferguson stated that joining the club would be the worst thing that Cristiano Ronaldo could do for his career.

Los Merengues' captain and iconic striker was stunned by the Scotsman's outburst and believes that playing for the Spanish giants would be the pinnacle for any player.

The public tussle over Ronaldo continued with Ferguson's words and Raúl felt that he could not let the comments pass without responding.

"Joining Madrid is the best thing that could happen to anyone," the Madrid star told Marca. "I have been here for 14 years and I would not change anything."

With rumour and counter-rumour a daily occurrence as the media try to be the first to predict whether Ronaldo will stay or leave United, the soundbytes from both camps are increasing.

Ferguson's statement came on the same day that the Premier League giants were given some encouragement by their player that he would stay as he talked about the team improving next term.

Madrid president Ramón Calderón has also continued to keep the saga in the papers with comments, but his optimism has waned of late and the club have now reportedly asked about Kaká.

Real 'would be bad for Ron'

Real 'would be bad for Ron'

Sir Alex Ferguson was at his most candid yet on Monday afternoon when asked about the future of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Reds boss firmly set out the facts that Ronaldo is contracted to United for four more years, adding that a move to Real Madrid would be “the worst thing he could do”.

The 23-year-old winger, who is currently recovering after an ankle operation that will keep him for around three months, has been the subject of much speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid this summer.

United have stated throughout that Ronaldo will not be leaving, while Sir Alex described a meeting with the player in Portugal as “amicable” and seemingly positive. At a press conference in Durban on the club’s visit to South Africa, the United manager took time out to further reveal his views.

“The future is that Cristiano signed a five year contract with the team last year and he has four years left. That’s definite, I’ve seen his signature,” said Sir Alex.

“Young lads can be turned by the talk of money and the moves that are happening all the time in football. But after the Champions League final he was the happiest boy in the world. I think he knows where the best club is to be, and that is Manchester United.

“I honestly believe that going to Real Madrid would be the worst thing he could do. I think he’s 23 years old and at the right club, a fantastic club.”

Team-mate Michael Carrick was far from pleading with Ronaldo but strongly expressed his views about the draw of Old Trafford. “I can only speak for myself,” he said. “But for me this is the best place in the world to be. Joining the club was the best decision I have ever made.”

Park vows to stay injury-free

Park vows to stay injury-free

Ji-sung Park has set his sights on an extended and injury-free spell in the first team next season.

The Korean winger's three-year United career has been punctuated by a series of injuries and he missed the first half of last season with cartilage damage.

That knee injury has resurfaced over pre-season, ending any chance of Park representing his country at this summer's Olympic Games or joining the Reds' trip to South Africa.

The 27-year-old returned to the UK from his homeland on Sunday and will have his knee assessed by medical staff at Carrington, although he is confident next season will be his most productive yet in a red shirt.

He told ManUtd.kr: "I've had a good rest and I trained on my own in Korea, but I will have my knee checked by the club. My training schedule will be decided after that."

"Each season there are many chances for me at United and I am trying to take those chances and perform on the pitch. I've always tried to do that, but it has been hard because I've picked up an injury every season.

"So my aim for next season is to stay injury-free for the whole campaign, then I can show what I am capable of on the pitch."

Kaizer Chiefs 1 United 1

Kaizer Chiefs 1 United 1

United’s pre-season preparations continued with an entertaining draw against Kaizer Chiefs in the Vodacom Challenge opener in Cape Town.

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson will have been satisfied by the work-out against an energetic side who are in the middle of their domestic season in South Africa.

Centre-back Jonathan Quartey gave the Chiefs the lead from the penalty spot in the 37th minute, before Chris Eagles converted Carlos Tevez’s cross for the second-half equaliser.

Rio Ferdinand and Mikael Silvestre were late withdrawals for United, but it was nevertheless a strong starting XI, with Ryan Giggs in the centre of midfield, Darren Fletcher on the right and Tevez and Wayne Rooney up front.

The Reds showed some neat touches but created little in the first half, with Paul Scholes’ free-kick – tipped over by Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune – about as good as it got.

The game began in glorious sunshine in Newlands Stadium, despite it being mid-winter in South Africa, and a colourful crowd did their best to create a carnival atmosphere.

The Chiefs’ main attacking threat was an Anderson lookalike, Siphiwe Tshabalala, who almost put his side ahead in the sixth minute, only to see his shot blocked by Gary Neville. And it was the Chiefs’ pacy left-winger who won the penalty, playing a neat one-two before charging into the box where he was upended by Neville. Quartey sent Tomasz Kuszczak the wrong way from the spot to opening the scoring.

Neville had some joy down the right with his trademark overlapping runs, but United failed to create many clear-cut chances in the opening 45 minutes.

Tevez, who did not feature against Aberdeen last weekend, headed Neville’s cross just over, while Nemanja Vidic glanced a corner narrowly wide.

United improved in the second half and Eagles equalised on the hour mark when he headed home Tevez’s superb right-wing cross.

Ferguson kept his promise to give all his players a run-out on the South African trip by making a raft of substitutions in the last 20 minutes.

The Chiefs flagged late in the game but United could not find a winner; however, the Reds’ main priority of improving fitness and sharpness was achieved.
United: Kuszczak; Neville (Simpson 62), Vidic, Brown (Evans 69), O'Shea; Fletcher, Scholes, Giggs, Eagles (Campbell 62); Tevez, Rooney (Gibson 69).

Eagles flying high

Eagles flying high

Chris Eagles was delighted to cap another first-team opportunity with the equalising goal against Kaizer Chiefs in Cape Town.

The 22-year-old midfielder has found his chances limited at United but showed some nice touches in his hour-long run out and headed home Carlos Tevez's superb cross from the right for the Reds' second-half goal.

“I’m over the moon to be back in action and to get another goal is good,” Eagles told MUTV. “But the main thing is to get fitness and sharpness for the season to come.

“It was a good game and I was pleased with my efforts. I had some time against Aberdeen last week and really enjoyed it – I just love playing in the first team.”

The fans in Newlands Stadium created a carnival atmosphere which, added to the game’s competitive edge, made it an enjoyable afternoon’s work.

“It was so loud out there – I could hardly understand John O’Shea at left-back because the fans were blowing their horns! But it was a brilliant atmosphere,” Eagles added.

“[Kaizer Chiefs] are halfway though their season so we expected them to be fit and strong, but it’s good to get a result and for me personally to get 65 minutes under mybelt.”

Eagles, who on Friday admitted to having talks with other clubs about a possible move, reiterated his desire to stay at United and push for a first-team place.

He added: “I’ve been here since I was 14 and I have no plans to leave. The manager is the main person I have to please and I respect him for what he has always done for me.”

Vidic Relishing South African Tour

Vidic Relishing South African Tour

Writing in a blog on the club's official website, Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has given an insight into the club’s pre-season tour of South Africa.

The club flew to South Africa this week on a pre-season trip that will see them play three games in a week before heading back to Manchester.

Warm Welcome

Writing in his blog Vidic admitted the travelling had taken its toll, but confessed it has been worth it for the warm welcome the players had received.

“It’s been a very tiring couple of days, but the welcome we received at Cape Town airport was fantastic,” wrote Vidic before adding, “On Friday morning the players were all tired after a long flight, but seeing everyone there to greet us was unbelievable.”

Whilst this is not the first time United have toured South Africa ahead of the new season, it was the first time in the country for the Serbian defender who confessed he was thoroughly enjoying his time there. Vidic revealed: “It’s my first time in South Africa and I’m very glad to be here. I’d heard a lot about the country from some of the lads, but to see it with my own eyes is really special.”

United began their new season preparations last weekend with a game against Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Vidic played the first half in a game that United won 2-0 but admitted that phyiscally it had been a struggle. The defender said: “If I’m honest, I didn’t feel good after the Aberdeen game. It was difficult and everyone felt a little heavy-legged after a hard week of training.”

Getting Better

However, the centre back was quick to add that this was to be expected at this stage in the season. He said: “But this is the time to be working hard, to work on our fitness and sharpness. I can tell you we’re all improving, every single day.”

The club will now play games against the Kaizer Chiefs and the Orlando Pirates and despite the games only being friendlies, Vidic’s competitive streak was very much in evidence.

“I’d like to win all three matches in South Africa but, personally, the results aren't all that important – the most important thing is fitness and getting ourselves sharp before the season,” admitted Vidic before concluding, “Most of us haven’t played football for six weeks and when you’re out for that long it’s natural that you lose some rhythm.”

El Tel: Ronaldo Selfish And Immoral

El Tel: Ronaldo Selfish And Immoral

Former England manager Terry Venables has launched an astonishing tirade on Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo in his weekly column in The Sun newspaper.

The Portuguese phenom has been the subject of intense rumours tipping him for a record shattering move to Real Madrid this summer, which he has been all too happy to stoke through carefully-timed hints and most of all his refusal to outright declare his intention to stay at Old Trafford.

"What Ronaldo is doing completely cuts through the principles we fought for. And it hurts," Venables wrote.

"Not one of us ever imagined players could be given a contract and then be free to walk away at a whim, no matter how many years were still remaining. We wouldn't have dreamt of asking for such a thing.

"Ronaldo has four years left on a highly lucrative deal that he was overjoyed to sign 15 months ago.

"What on earth gives him the right, now, to just throw it in the air and say 'I've had enough, I'm off'?

"It's selfish, it's immoral, it's potentially devastating for the game as a whole. It's wrong. And it's only any good for Ronaldo."

Venables' inflammatory commentary was likely penned before United manager Sir Alex Ferguson declared that Cristiano Ronaldo will not be joining Real Madrid this summer based on his meeting with the player in Lisbon last week.

Eagles prefers not to fly

Eagles prefers not to fly

Chris Eagles insists he wants to remain a Manchester United player, despite confirming he’s had talks with other clubs about a possible Old Trafford exit.

Eagles, now 22, joined the Reds eight years ago and has recently been linked with a move to Championship side Burnley.

The attacking midfielder has played 17 times for the first team since making his debut in 2003 and is currently in South Africa as part of the Reds’ pre-season tour.

But he knows opportunities at United are limited and admits he could be lured away by an offer of regular first-team football.

“I’d love to stay at Old Trafford and make my career as a United player,” Eagles told MUTV in Cape Town, “but I need to think about playing regularly.

“There have been talks with Premier League and Championship clubs, but nothing’s been decided.”

Eagles said he’ll seek advice from United manager Sir Alex Ferguson at some point on the tour in an effort to evaluate his future.

“It’s difficult because I want to play every week, whether I leave United or stay at United. If I think I’m going to get a chance here then I’d love to stay. If not, maybe I have to look somewhere else.

“I’ll speak to the gaffer over the next week or so and see what happens. There are all sorts of options available.”

Boss: Ronaldo's staying put

Boss: Ronaldo's staying put

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he met with Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal last week to discuss the player's future and insists the winger will not be sold to Real Madrid.

The 23-year-old has been openly coveted by Real Madrid over the last few months with the player himself reported to be keen on a switch to the Bernabeu.

However, at a press conference in South Africa to mark the start of United's pre-season trip, the Reds' boss reiterated the club's stance that Ronaldo is going nowhere.

"The meeting went well - I think we both put across our points of view - where we stand and where the player stands," explained Sir Alex.

"I can say he'll be a Manchester United player next season. That's our stance - he won't be sold."

Many of the tabloids had speculated that comments attributed to Ronaldo over his desire to move to Madrid may have put a strain on his relationship with his manager. But Sir Alex says that has never been the case.

"It’s not a difficult position. I was on my holiday and I was not going to interrupt my holiday, believe me," he insisted after being asked why he had not commented on the matter up to this point.

"I wasn’t panicked because the player is under contract so the strength and the rights are with Manchester United.

"What we have done well is to say nothing. We’ve kept quiet on this matter and kept it private and what I said toCristiano remains private. I did go and see him last week in Portugal and it was very amicable – there were no problems. That’s where we are and we carry on."

The winger is currently recovering from ankle surgery and Sir Alex confirmed Ronaldo is unlikely to be back in action until October.

"He’s had an operation and he’ll be out for three months," said the manager. "He’s on crutches for the first four weeks, he’ll be in rehabilitation for the next four and then the following four he’ll be back into football training. The time mapped out is three months and we won’t bring him back a day earlier than that.

"I think when players have operations we have a responsibility that the player comes back 100 per cent and we’ll carry that out as we normally do. There’ll be no risk-taking – we never take risks. Our goal is to always make sure that the player gets back 100 per cent and that will be the same in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo."

Evra charged by FA

Evra charged by FA

Patrice Evra has been charged with improper conduct following an altercation with Chelsea's groundsman after United's 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge in April.

A statement on the FA's website confirmed the charge and also reported that Rio Ferdinand had been "reminded of his responsibilities" after an incident involving a Chelsea steward.

"The FA has today issued charges against Manchester United defender Patrice Evra and Chelsea groundsman Sam Bethell in connection with an incident that occured on the pitch after the match at Stamford Bridge on 26 April," read the statement.

"Both Evra and Bethell have been charged with improper conduct in respect of their altercation. Bethell has also been charged with using abusive language aggravated by reference to nationality/race.

"The charges are the result of a thorough investigation conducted by The FA over the past three months. In bringing the charges, The FA used video evidence, CCTV footage and various witness statements from individuals present.

"The FA also investigated a post-match incident involving Rio Ferdinand and a Chelsea steward. No charge has been issued, on the basis that the incident was an accident and an apology had been made.

"In reaching its decision The FA relied largely on evidence provided by the steward in question. However, Ferdinand has been reminded of his responsibilities."

Captain confirms ambitions

Reds skipper Gary Neville hopes to play a big role in United’s defence of the Barclays Premier League and UEFA Champions League this season.

A string of injuries and the impressive form of Wes Brown meant Neville played just nine minutes during the 2007/08 campaign (as a substitute against AS Roma), but, speaking in Cape Town ahead of the Saturday’s Vodacom Challenge opener against Kaizer Chiefs, the defender said he was determined to force his way back into the side.

“Last season was very frustrating from a personal point of view,” he admitted.

“It was disappointing not to be involved in what was such a great season for the club. Playing in these matches during pre-season will help my fitness and my sharpness and hopefully I can be part of another successful season.”

Neville emerged unscathed after completing 45 minutes last Saturday against Aberdeen, although expects stiffer competition in South Africa.

“The match last week was the first rung on the ladder, if you like. It’s the first game I’ve started with the first team for well over 12 months.

“I’m expecting Saturday’s game against Kaizer Chiefs to be a lot more difficult though. If selected, I’m looking forward to playing.”

Fletcher feeling fit

Fletcher feeling fit

Such is the competition for a place in Sir Alex Ferguson’s double-winning side in 2008/09 that Darren Fletcher revealed he didn’t completely relax over the summer –putting in a few extra hours to keep himself fit in the close season.

Fletcher wasn’t the only one; The Scot says all the players have come back physically sharp. United’s gruelling campaign came to end on 21 May in Moscow, in that equally demanding Champions League final win over Chelsea on penalties.

And even though Premier League and Champions League winners’ medals may have allowed the players to mentally shut off in satisfaction of their achievements, physically they weren’t letting themselves go.

“In modern day football you can’t relax fully, especially at Manchester United,” Fletch told MUTV. “There’s such great competition for places and expectations are so high here.

“You do need to give your body a rest, but you can’t totally switch off. You make sure you do a little bit of work so you don’t come back way behind the other lads for pre-season. We’ve got a big squad and the competition will be there right from the off. By everyone’s reaction, we’ve all come back quite sharp and it’s the same as usual: training is at ahigh tempo because everyone wants to play.”

It says a lot for the determination of this group of players that winning two of the game’s biggest prizes last season didn’t induce an attitude of this being a job done. This is merely the start.

“We all feel we’ve let our bodies recover from what was a long, hard season,” adds Darren. “Now we’re preparing for another tough campaign. But we all hope it goes right to the end again.

“Pre-season has gone well so far. Tony Strudwick, the fitness coach, has put together some good sessions. There’s a lot of hard work in the gym and plenty of running to be done.”

Fletcher had to contend with the usual newspaper gossip over the summer linking him with a move away from Old Trafford - a story he insists has no foundation in truth. “The papers don’t have a lot to write about when the season finishes,” he says. “So they seem to make these things up. You learn to deal with it. I’m focused on United, and unless someone tells me otherwise, that’s what I’ll continue to do.”

Calderón: Ronaldo? Done Deal

Calderón: Ronaldo? Done Deal

Real Madrid Ramón Calderón has insisted on the success of the Cristiano Ronaldo deal, going as far as to say that the Portuguese is expected at Santiago Bernabéu in two weeks' time.

The last Real Madrid board meeting before summer holidays took place yesterday afternoon at the club's stadium. Calderón's board of directors was anxiously eager to hear what the chairman had to say on the summer transfers, specially on the interest in Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael van der Vaart.

Calderón started the meeting by saying that Real Madrid will have an impressive budget of €400 million for the next season, which was applauded by the entire boardroom.

He went on to comment on the status of Cristiano Ronaldo's transfer, ensuring that he is tranquil over the success of the deal.

"Relax, he won't say no now. We won't miss on him. You can be sure of that. In ten or fifteen days we will arrive," Calderón said.

Not even Ronaldo's ankle injury appears to have cooled Real Madrid's interest in the Portugal international, with reports suggesting the Spanish champions to be readying an offer worth €85 million.

Calderón further added that Van der Vaart is on the brink of completing a move to Real Madrid, having revealed that the Holland international will arrive for a fee in the region of €6 million.

He also informed that Julio Baptista and Roberto Soldado are on their way out of Santiago Bernabéu and that their sales will help the club finance their bid for Ronaldo.

Keane Admits Evans Deal Looks Remote

Keane Admits Evans Deal Looks Remote

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has been a top target for Sunderland after spending successful loan spells at the Stadium of Light in each of the last two seasons. But Black Cats manager Roy Keane admits that the club's chances of luring the Northern Ireland international from Old Trafford look remote.

Roy Keane appears to be resigned to the prospect of Sunderland failing in their attempts to take Manchester United defender Jonny Evans to Wearside on a permanent deal.

Evans has impressed in two separate loan spells with Keane’s Sunderland, and the ex-United skipper would love to add him to his squad.

The problem is, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson rates Evans, 20, very highly, and wants to keep him at Old Trafford.

Setanta Sports quote Keane as saying: "Jonny is under contract, and I certainly don't want to go into conversation about players who are under contract at clubs.

"Other managers do it and that annoys me. If we want to get a player and we want to speak to a player, you have got to do a deal with the club.

"It was the same last year. We all know Jonny is a top player and in an ideal world, you would like to bring him to your club.

"But he is not at a bad club in Man United, is he? And Man United certainly don't need the money."

Evans played for United in their pre-season friendly at Aberdeen on Saturday, and has travelled to South Africa with the rest of the Red Devils’ squad, suggesting that his future is firmly with the English and European champions.

Ronaldo And Fergie Meeting Details Emerge

Ronaldo And Fergie Meeting Details Emerge

Cristiano Ronaldo told Alex Ferguson that he wants to go to Real Madrid while the Scot reacted by claiming he join anyone but the Spanish giants in their secret meeting in Portugal last weekend, it has been revealed. After weeks of a tense stand-off, the Manchester United manager flew out to finally speak to his star player and the pair came no closer to reaching an agreement, according to AS.

The Madrid-biased paper believes that Ronaldo finally told his mentor face-to-face of his desire to go to the Bernabéu, but the news was not well received.

In response, the fiery Scot stated that if he was allowed to leave Old Trafford then it would be for any other club expect Madrid following their behaviour in recent weeks.

Ronaldo then reminded his boss that he feels certain promises were made about him being allowed to leave without a great furore if certain trophies were won and targets met.

Ferguson is said to have listened patiently and not been surprised by some of the points made by the player, even the view that Manchester United should make a move easier.

But the United chief was never going to be convinced by any of the arguments and left Portugal realising that the situation is more difficult than he realised.

Following the meeting, Ronaldo told friends that he would only be returning to Manchester this summer in order to finalise a move away from Old Trafford and not to play again, AS continued.

The report suggests that the pair will meet again after the Red Devils return from Manchester and that the latest details of the talks has lifted spirits in Madrid.

Los Merengues' president Ramón Calderón knows that he cannot afford to miss out on Ronaldo after making his desire to prise the player away from United so public.

His efforts are an attempt to mirror the quests that the club undertook to sign Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo under the previous regime, when Calderón was a member of the board, but this time the plan is not working as smoothly.

Keane To Ronaldo: Just P*** Off Fergie

Keane To Ronaldo: Just P*** Off Fergie

Roy Keane has added fuel to the furore caused by Sepp Blatter's claim that football clubs are guilty of modern day slavery with a statement that seemed to back the FIFA president's controversial position.

Although the ex Manchester United captain and current Sunderland manager did not use the word slavery, he is sure to rekindle the debate by stating that footballers are treated like 'pieces of meat'.

“If a player wants to leave, all he has to do is train with the wrong attitude and I guarantee you’d p*** off any manager,” Keane said in The Sun.

“There’s not much loyalty left in football, unfortunately, from my own experiences. Clubs sell players sometimes like a piece of meat, so if a player wants to go and better himself, good luck to him.

"When a club is finished with you, they get rid. My advice is look after yourself,"

"If you get a chance for bigger and better things, then go for it. I've experienced that myself.

"People question players' loyalty. I question clubs' loyalty. It's a business to them.

"If you're not needed then you can be out of the door in 10 minutes, and I'm speaking from experience. Clubs buy and sell players. Clubs sell players sometimes like a piece of meat."

Blatter had caused a firestorm of controversy last week by declaring that United’s refusal to sell Ronaldo to Real Madrid, and their further threat to punish the player’s disloyalty, amounted to “modern slavery”.
